Target’s Pop-Up Store in L.A.

August 4th, 2006 Posted in Target

When I first read about Target’s pop-up store for its limited-edition Paul & Joe collection, I was intrigued. The term “pop-up” conjured an image of a movable, easily dismantled store. But when I saw the store this morning, I realized that the term alludes to its temporary nature as the store is open until August 31 only. Keep in mind, this concept is quite new and is not as common in Los Angeles as it is in New York.

What a refreshing change this pop-up store is from the usual box type Target stores! Located in West Hollywood on Melrose Place and La Cienega, the space is more of an upscale boutique comparable to its hip neighbors, Marc Jacobs and Marni, than that of a mass market retailer.

This is the entrance to the store.

Sure, Target’s bullseye logo is visible but instead of a humongous presence, smaller red bullseyes are interspersed with a paisley-like design and this pattern adorns the store’s exterior walls, giving a très French vibe. Oh la la! I half expected to hear French accordion classics as I stepped through the threshold but, thankfully, that did not happen.

This is not the entrance.

The interior is spacious, bright and modern. Clothes hang on wooden hangers and line the interior walls. The boudoir like dressing rooms are surrounded with pink, white and fuschia voile curtains. Each room has a white framed mirror, a white wooden “tree” to hang clothes on and, …

… I didn’t notice until uploading my photos, a pretty glass light fixture. Look, there’s a white bullseye on the mirror. It looks quite subtle, eh?

I didn’t notice other details as I was busy looking at the clothes, of course! I did think, “What a difference ambiance makes”. Everything suddenly looked like they deserved a higher price tag!

The store carries everything in the collection. Unfortunately, the black kimono dress that I was eyeing was sold out. And because I didn’t want to leave empty handed, I got this navy v-neck Paul and Joe logo sweater that I haven’t seen in the regular stores yet. It’s quite ironic that I got that being the anti-logo gal that I’ve become lately.

Oh well, if I change my mind about the sweater, at least I’ll still have this cute shopping bag to keep!

i finally found the teal kimono dress but in a M. what i did, i washed it and put it in the dryer to shrink a bit – it worked! i also got this (the mint green is prettier but of course it was out of sizes).
