New York Fashion Week Fall 2007: Marc Jacobs

Leave it to Marc Jacobs to surprise us. His 2007 fall collection is a total departure from the voluminous looks of previous seasons. It looks ‘grown-up’, sophisticated and mature in comparison. The silhouette is long and very lean. Almost all of the models wore cloche and wide brimmed hats tilted at an angle and black tights with black oxford platform shoes. Seen were tailored pieces, sweaters worn over long pleated skirts, pointed collars, boat necklines, slim belts, front-buttoned dresses, vests over vests, slim fitting belted coats, short and long gloves, long hemlines, soft fabrics, large clutches and a sprinkling of padded shoulders and sequined pieces. The look is sleek, poised, refined and, despite the menswear details, very ladylike. There are influences from the 20s-40s and 70s. The color palette includes black, gray, midnight, burgundy, mustard, red, purple, teal and cream. Evening wear consists of textured fabrics mixed with duchesse satin, velvets, and asymmetrical necklines accented with huge shoulder sashes.
Love him or hate him, when it comes to moving on to the next level and not boring us, Marc Jacobs delivers. See the whole collection here.
