Another Fast Fashion Find
March 20th, 2007 Posted in Fashion, Splurge vs. Steal

Here’s a fast fashion find submitted by an eagle eyed reader. On the left is Diane Von Furstenberg’s Cerisier shift dress, featured here a couple of months ago. It retails for $325. On the right is the Sabrina dress from Forever 21 that retails for $32.80, a mere fraction of the DVF dress. The only difference that I can see from the pictures is the neckline.
I don’t know whether to be excited or to be concerned about such a blatant copy. I’m not a snob when it comes to fast fashion. I shop there. But will I do a walk of shame when I wear the knock off? What do you think?

I struggle over the same question… but in the end I think designers should all start to move towards offering great design for all price ranges. You should have to rich to be able to look great!

I love the dvf dress sooo much. If I find the knock-off on my next forever 21 trip…I’ll be pretty tempted. I don’t have too many reservations about knock-off clothes. Then again, I’m sure the quality’s much worse, so be happy with yours, michelle!

haha! i saw the f21 dress yesterday. the silk is a bit on the thin side i could rip it if i moved the wrong way, i imagine. not sure if it would be see through on a sunny day or if i would need to wear a slip underneath. there is no zipper so the fit isn’t that great. i have not seen the dvf version yet so i can’t compare. steph, this would look good on you since you’re tall and slim. on me, there’s gaping at the back which is usually what happens when i wear clothing meant for taller people.
michelle, don’t feel too bad about your purchase. i wasn’t too impressed with the f21 version. but then again, i hid the one and only dress i found in the store. i’m thinking about getting it!

[...] Yes, folks. We’re not the only who noticed. As reported by WWD: Diane von Furstenberg Studio filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Forever 21 Retail Inc. late last week in Manhattan federal court. According to legal documents obtained Tuesday, the company alleged Forever 21 has sold dresses that infringe on its Cerisier and Aubrey designs. [...]

[...] About a week ago Coutorture ran a “must read” from Shop Diary about a disturbing chic cheap find that was dangerously close to complete knockoff. The two designers involved? Diane Von Furstenberg and Forever 21. Well, you heard it in the blogosphere first because today WWD reported that DVF is suing the fast fashion label over ripping their Cerisier dress. [...]

[...] Forget Diane Von Furstenberg’s Cerisier dress. This “Arum” blouse from DVF has the same “small dentelle” and flower lace border print as the Cerisier but comes at a more wearable cut. You’ll get more mileage out of this top. And it’s $99, or 40% off, at Bluefly. [...]

[...] P.P.P.S. Yes, I know the postscripts are getting out of hand but apparently both of the dresses in the picture are Forever 21….the real dresses do look very similar but it’s not quite as impressive a knockoff as I had originally thought. [...]
