Diane Von Furstenberg Sues Forever 21

When I posted the Cerisier knock-off last week, I wondered “What would Diane do?” Now I know. As reported by WWD:
Diane von Furstenberg Studio filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Forever 21 Retail Inc. late last week in Manhattan federal court. According to legal documents obtained Tuesday, the company alleged Forever 21 has sold dresses that infringe on its Cerisier and Aubrey designs.
The picture above shows the DVF “Aubrey” on the left and the F21 “Pinecone” on the right. I thought the F21 version looked vaguely familiar when I first saw it but I couldn’t quite place it.

Ahahahaha it’s about time. Yet…I hope Forever21 gets away with this forever.

Psh…Forever 21 has been doing this for so long already. It’s not like Forever 21 is taking business away from Diane Von Furstenberg. In most cases, the people that would spend on the original wouldn’t even want the Forever 21 version. Most people who buy the Forever 21 version wouldn’t buy the original…even if the copy didn’t exisit. Oh well. They do have a right to be pissed though.

this is true, but the main problem (for forever21) is that DVF copyrighted the prints on the fabrics. copyrighting the flowers is no different than copyrighting a company logo–they’re designed specifically for a company and are unique. that’s why forever21 is being sued. they never got permission to use the print.

[...] How crazy is this Diane von Furstenberg vs. Forever 21 copyright scandal? I think the photo above captures the comparison between DVF’s Cresier dress on the left ($325) and F21’s Sabrina dress ($32.50…but don’t bother it’s already sold out, obvs) Nevertheless there is a whole slew of DVF’s looks that Forever 21 has knocked off–check out other looks here, and here or just explore the F21 site on your own, it’s teeming with opportunities–which leaves me wondering why Forever 21 chose to knock off this particular designer? I mean I didn’t even realize I was such a fan of Diane von Furstenberg, I generally don’t even check out her collections because I figure I’ll have years to wear wrap dresses when I’m old and businesslike…..now I find out that I probably already own DVF look. Veddy interesting. Personally I’m more excited by the Anna Sui inspired look currently winging its way toward the college mailroom. [...]

[...] My bad, I thought the prints were the same but they’re just similar. Maybe this is when Forever 21 started down the slippery slope of copyright infringement. [...]

personally i dont think any print should be copy righted…. if this was done all the time how do u expend fashion trends in different price points such as designer and bridge all the way down to moderate and discounters to be sold? no target market would be happy… not everyone is rich and everybody wants to feel like they are some what fashion savvy. Plus do you honestly think every college girl can afford these designer things? We can barely pay tuiton. Being a fashion merch. major this just bothers me and wut is sueing the new f-ing trend? get over it you ppl r rich already. I mean hellooo private label knocks off couture and designer lets get serious this is just the way the fashion world works. She should be flattered that someone likes her line of design.

Diane VF and the lawsuit Gwen Stefani just go to show how jealous these “designers” are. Forever 21 has TRENDY clothes with GREAT prices and that is why these greedy, egotistical designers are freakin out…..F21 is taking their business!!!! These designers need to understand that they don’t have a copyright on clothing designs, only the name on the tag!!! (For example, if Diane VF designed a green tank top is she going to sue Target because they had a similar tank…..NOOOOOO, duh!!!) Hell with these top designers, they charge to much and know to little about what sells!!!

dear ms. furstenberg,
wrap dresses has been made for eons!
centuries ago, asians made them. how would you like it if they sued you for all the wrap dresses you’ve profited on?
the solid color and printed wrap dresses have been sold by other dress designers for decades! you got lucky and now you think you own the right to the wrap dress pattern! get fair, furstenberg! stop trying to destroy other companies!
