J. Crew Cynthia Peasant Blouse, Sold Out

March 20th, 2007 | 11 Comments | Posted in Covet

How crazy is this? I just saw the Cynthia peasant blouse on the pages of Instyle Magazine’s April issue this morning. And since I’m on the prowl for yellow clothing, I made a mental note to check this saffron top today. Imagine my dismay when I checked jcrew.com this afternoon and found out that it’s already sold out and worse, that it’s selling on eBay. The good news is that they are not going for outrageous prices. There’s still hope! I’ve already put one on my watchlist (crosses fingers). But I want to touch and feel the goods before buying first, dammit! Life is so unfair. Maybe Forever 21 will come to rescue? Not!

I just called the JCrew store nearby. They still have white and khaki available but not the saffron, black or blue. The style came out only three weeks ago. Sigh!

Update: I found it!

Another Fast Fashion Find

March 20th, 2007 | 25 Comments | Posted in Fashion, Splurge vs. Steal

Here’s a fast fashion find submitted by an eagle eyed reader. On the left is Diane Von Furstenberg’s Cerisier shift dress, featured here a couple of months ago. It retails for $325. On the right is the Sabrina dress from Forever 21 that retails for $32.80, a mere fraction of the DVF dress. The only difference that I can see from the pictures is the neckline.

I don’t know whether to be excited or to be concerned about such a blatant copy. I’m not a snob when it comes to fast fashion. I shop there. But will I do a walk of shame when I wear the knock off? What do you think?

Fast Fashion Find

Remember my post about inspired pieces from Forever 21? Well, I came across this Madeira mini dress (pictured on the left) from Tory Burch today while browsing through their resort and pre-spring sales. The Madeira is now on sale at 40% off or $150. It is the exact same style of the Milano Dress (right) at F21! The embroidery is slightly different but the overall look is the same. Wow. Looks like fast fashion is getting, erm, faster!

How I Keep My Hair Straight and Shiny

March 13th, 2007 | 4 Comments | Posted in Beauty

They say straight shiny hair is back in style once again. It’s funny when I hear that because this is what my hair has been for most of my life. Believe me, I tried spiral waves back in late 2005 but it was just too much work for me. Plus the results weren’t worth the effort. So I decided to stick to the tried and true: straight hair.

Unfortunately for me, my once stick straight hair has turned slightly wavy through the years. And hard water and color treatments have made it dry. So keeping my hair shiny and straight does take a little work now, but not too much. Here’s my current hair care regimen:

Frederic Fekkai Glossing Shampoo Being a recent fan of Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream, I got a small bottle of this shampoo to try. It’s formulated with naturally derived olive oil extract and is the perfect remedy for dull, lifeless hair. It provides a luxurious lather to gently cleanse and nourish, leaving hair with a vivid gloss and lasting shine. I love running my fingers through my hair when it’s dry just to feel the glossy strands. I meant to try the conditioner that goes along with this shampoo but the one that I’m using right now works so well that I have yet to try it!

Sebastian Laminates Conditioner I picked this up from Target because it was on sale! And I don’t regret it. It’s a creamy conditioner that adds moisture and shine. It also softens dry, frizzy or chemically treated hair like mine. Enriched with next generation silicone complex for superior smoothness and brilliance and formulated with botanical proteins and amino acids for ultimate sleekness, its one more reason why my hair stays shiny and smooth. I love it!

Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream I first discovered this leave in conditioner when I packed a tiny sample for a recent trip. It was a free beauty gift and turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A tiny pea sized dab converted my dull, lifeless hair to sleek and smooth. I was amazed. It kept my hair soft and healthy throughout my weeklong trip. It’s also got olive oil and unlike other leave in hair treatments that make hair dryer the longer you use it, this one actually nourishes. It also protects hair with UVA and UVB sunscreens and from heat from hair tools like blow dryers and flat irons.

Oscar Blandi Jasmine Oil Serum I don’t use this everyday anymore since I started with the Fekkai and Sebastian products listed above. Those three combined make my hair shiny enough. But when I do need the extra shine, I dab a few drops on dry hair. Without Fekkai’s glossing cream, I apply this on wet hair. What I love about this is the jasmine scent! It’s faint enough even for those who dislike floral scents. This oil serum also prevents unwanted frizz while giving shine, definition, and light reflection to dull hair.

Paddle Brush I have yet to own a Mason Pearson brush because I’m quite happy with my paddle brush which is ideal for smoothing and straightening longer hair. The flexible bristles and the soft, pliable base make detangling and styling ouch-free and easy. With a paddle brush, the longer I brush my hair, the smoother it becomes. As recommended by my stylist, I don’t brush my hair when it’s wet. I also don’t blow dry my hair everyday. I just wrap my hair in an absorbent towel after wringing my hair dry and rubbing excess water with the towel. Then when my hair is dry, I use the paddle brush to straighten and smoothen my hair.

Farouk Chi Turbo Flat Iron
I do use a flat iron but only on mornings when I wake up and my hair is just a mess and it’s not yet time to wash my hair (I wash it every other day). I bought the two inch flat iron so that it’s faster to get through my full head of hair. Of course, I clip my hair in sections and work through. As my hair is naturally straight, it doesn’t take long for me to do. Just five minutes tops. Also, I always apply a heat protector like Fekkai’s Glossing Cream or Oscar Blandi’s Jasmine Oil Serum before running the flat iron through my hair. I’ve had this for almost three years and it’s a fantastic product.

Kerastase Nutritive Masque Oleo-Relax This is an all time favorite of mine. Once every two weeks, I deep condition my hair with this. It keeps my hair healthy and smooth. With all these hair products combined, I’m finding that I don’t have to use this deep conditioning treatment as much as I had to before.

I’ll never get back the straight shiny hair I’ve had from my youth naturally. So I’m quite happy with what these products have done to maintain my hair at its optimum. I just ran my fingers through my hair and I love it! Do you have any favorite hair care products that you’re just as enthusiastic about?

The Secret Balenciaga Bag

March 6th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Covet, Fashion Week, Handbags

Did anyone notice that handbags were not seen at Balenciaga’s recent runway show? I keep an eye on the handbags during runway shows a bit more than the clothes so I did notice. Cheryl Locke, Fashion and Beauty Editor at ELLE.com did some sleuthing and found out that, indeed, Balenciaga has new bags for fall. She saw them in person in the fashion house’s showroom on the Left Bank and, promising not to publish any pictures, describes them as thus:

….equestrian-inspired, in cognac leather with black patent leather trim. It’s a large east and west satchel with the curvy lines of a saddle bag. There is a zipper closure with a large silver D-ring buckle on the side and a side pocket inspired by the round kneepads polo players wear. The straps are padded and attached by chainlink. Judging by the ancillary products: wallets and mini bags, the company is anticipating it to be a best-seller. There was also a red leather covered lunchbox bag with a long shoulder handle. It’s very much in line with the boarding school blazers Ghesquière showed. An embellished B logo on a red leather patch announces that this is not the Scooby Doo lunchbox you carried during childhood. It opens up on both sides with a built in mirror and credit card holders, making it perfect club and city gear for the grown up girl. I spotted my fall bag in aubergine, a color we’ve been noticing since New York. It’s a flat tote with a front pocket resembling a saddle bag. Called the “Lune,” French for moon, and so named because the closure resembles a large full moon. Beautiful!

Has this piqued your interest? I’m not sure that it has with me as when I think “saddle bag”, I think of Dior’s Saddle Bag and I never liked it. But considering that I’m a very visual person, I will just have to wait until the pictures are released before I decide whether I like them or not.

They do know how to keep us in suspense, don’t they?

Free Shipping at Nordstrom and LVR

March 6th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Fab Shops, Free Shipping

I always like shopping online especially if shipping is free. Several online retailers like Shopbop and Zappos already have free shipping by default but then it doesn’t hurt when others join the fray, doesn’t it? Here are some free shipping offers that I got from my inbox recently:

Free Shipping. Shop NORDSTROM.com
Nordstrom.com: Purchase a pair of regular priced shoes and get free standard shipping on your entire order. Your purchase doesn’t have to consist of shoes only but you do have to buy at least one pair. Offer ends April 2, 2007. Now if anybody has a coupon code, that would even be better.

Luisa Via Roma: Now this got me excited. Remember the Givenchy Nightingale bag that I was lusting after? Well, there are some styles that are not in the U.S. yet so getting it from LVR might be the answer. And get this, it’s free WORLDWIDE shipping. That’s already $50 saved to ship to the U.S. This offer is valid for Spring/Summer 2007 collections and until March 31, 2007 (midnight Italian time) only. LVR doesn’t have any control over import duties so you’ll still have to pay them. Perhaps Fedex can help out?

But, yay! I just found out that my sister will be flying to Italy next week and she asked me if I want her to buy me something. Oh, my! I’m so excited, I can’t think past getting the Nightingale. Perhaps there is something better? Something that can’t be found here or is cheaper in Italy than in the U.S. Frette sheets? I don’t fancy the Prada 2007 Spring handbags so that’s out. I’m having a brain freeze right now. Any suggestions? (Boy, did this veer off topic very quickly. Sorry!)
