It’s Here and I Don’t Know Whether to Be Happy or Sad

June 7th, 2007 Posted in Handbags

The backlash against this bag is just too sad because people are missing the point. I have refused plastic bags since I became aware of the impact it has on the environment. I’ve been taking another reusable bag to stores instead. I guess that is what happens when something is hyped up too much and people follow blindly just because it is an “IN” thing. As I have, get it because you believe in and support the message not because of it’s “must have” status (which, at this point, is a dubious distinction anyway). If you don’t like this bag, feel free to use another reusable bag. Really, you only have to get the message, not the bag.

To be sure, I think a lot more people are practicing refusing plastic bags now more than ever because of the awareness this bag has raised. I thought it was great when I was at Target a month ago and the young male cashier asked if I needed a bag for the two items I bought. Since I did not bring my reusable bag with me then, it was great to be reminded that yes, I did not need a plastic bag. Additionally, there are some people in my social circle who, gasp, do not know about this bag. I’m hoping it will be a conversation piece to raise awareness. I also have the FEED bag which, thankfully, isn’t too hyped that people rally against it.

I completely agree with you. I’ve been excited to get my Anya Hindmarch bag which I got a call from UPS today, but it didn’t stop me from buying another market bag in the meantime to carry all my groceries and other goodies. The madness with trying to get this bag is a little ridiculous but the feed bag or a Marc Jacobs tote ($12) will do the trick too.

I am with you. I sometimes end up carrying things in my hand and refuse a plastic bag when I’m at a store. It’s worse when you go to a place like Safeway and they want to put your laundry detergent in a bag when it already has HANDLES!! I like that this bag is already light and it seems pretty sturdy. It will just be a great message for everyone else when I go to the store or run errands. It’s definitely the perfect bag to do so! xoxo
