Must Read: Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster

August 20th, 2007 Posted in Books

Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas was released last week and already, it is proving to be this summer’s Fashion Babylon. The book looks at how the luxury market went mass market by exposing the underbelly of the $157-billion luxury goods industry. What were once family owned fashion houses are now part of multibillion conglomerates whose products now lack the exclusivity and quality craftsmanship that once defined what luxury truly should be. There are lots of dish in the book from girls working as prostitutes in Japan to earn money for bags, to the celebrity stylist who got a fashion house to pay for her liposuction in exchange for dressing her client in their clothes and even Miuccia Prada’s terrible secret. Definitely a must read!
