Favorite Beauty Products of 2007

December 31st, 2007 | 7 Comments | Posted in Beauty

It’s the last day of the year and I realize that I haven’t covered beauty products here as much as I should have. So here are my top ten favorite beauty products in 2007. Some are new products discovered this year that I posted reviews on and absolutely loved. Many thanks to Annie of Blogdorf Goodman for organizing Favorite Things 2007 and for including ShopDiary among the roster of participating blogs!

A makeup remover and facial cleanser in one, it’s perfect for my dry to normal skin. It cleanses without leaving my skin feeling taut and gives my usually dry skin the added moisturizing that it needs. The product pictured above is suitable for all skin types.

This is the year that I became conscious about the effects of daily exposure to the sun, after having developed a few sun spots on my cheeks and living in sunny southern California. Clarins UV Plus SPF 40 is lightweight and non-greasy and the SPF40 provides maximum sun protection. It’s great to wear under makeup too. I use it everyday and during the summer, I even skipped wearing tinted moisturizer over it.

Here is another can’t live without sun protection product. Read my review here.

4. Bond No.9 Chinatown

I discovered this fragrance early this year, almost two years after its release, and how I love it! Every time I spritz it on I enjoy being enveloped by its unique and intoxicating scent. Read my review here.

I was overjoyed when Bond No. 9 released their Body Creams in August. I thought, “What better way to complement my favorite scent with?” It’s a luxurious body cream that leaves my skin smooth and fragrant. And the scent lasts for hours!

A very effective skin exfoliator, it has cleared up the blackheads on my nose and brightened my complexion. It stings a bit upon application but that feeling subsides in a minute. My facialist used to bug me about regular exfoliation and now she doesn’t anymore. And, sssh! Don’t tell her but, with our conflicting schedules, I’ve found that I can stretch out my regular facials a bit. This product is pricey but worth it!

When I started wearing this lovely deep red lipstick this fall, I received many compliments from my girlfriends. I love that it can go on sheer or intense depending on how much you apply to your lips. It is flattering and I’m glad I got one as it is already sold out everywhere.

I use this foundation primer all the time except during the summer. It helps my foundation go on smoothly and helps it stay put throughout the day. I’m glad that they now come in tubes as the glass pump bottles were a bit difficult to use.

This is the year that I started seeing fine lines between my eyebrows and around my eyes. I was a bit skeptical to try this so when I found this in a 2 oz tube for only $65 in Costco along with Hylexin (doesn’t work for me) and Idebenol (I haven’t tried it yet), I gave it a try. Applying it on target areas consistently has helped ease the fine lines. As I apply only to specific areas, a little goes a long way.

Using the right beauty tools is as important as discovering the right beauty products. Apart from my all time favorite Tweezerman tweezers, I could not live without my 10x magnification mirror this year. It helps with a more precise makeup application and for spotting skin imperfections (such as my fine lines!). I have a bigger magnification vanity mirror at home but this travel mirror is something I can bring with me anywhere and I use it everyday.

The Making of Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2008 Ad Campaign

    December 29th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Ad Campaigns

The full video of the making of Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2008 ad campaign is now up on louisvuitton.com. The campaign brings together six of the twelve supermodels who walked the catwalk in September carrying Richard Prince monogrammed bags. Bombshell type models Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour, Eva Herzigova, Angela Lindvall and Natalia Vodianova evoke the Louis Vuitton woman who, according to creative director Marc Jacobs, “is glossy and glamorous regardless of what the trends are.” The campaign, which WWD likened to an issue of Hot Rod magazine, was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot with Richard Prince volunteering his 1970 Dodge Challenger for the shoot. Zoe Cassavetes directed the video shot at Spring Studios in London. Watch it here. Screen captures from the video are below. My favorite part is when Marc Jacobs leans in with the six supermodels for a shot. Priceless! Now, I’d pay to see THAT photo.

Andy Warhol Union Square by Bond No. 9

December 28th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Fragrances

Next up in the series of Andy Warhol fragrances created by Bond No. 9 is Andy Warhol Union Square. The scent will be available in a collection of 10 bottles, each featuring a design based on Warhol’s Flowers series, done by the pop artist in the 1970s. For avid collectors and hardcore Warhol fanatics, the complete collection of ten 100 ml bottles will be available in a box for $1,500. They will also be available in individual flacons of 100 ml at $195 and 50 ml at $135. The scent is a floral fragrance with a musk and spicy twist and is composed of top notes of lily of the valley and green stem; middle notes of blue freesia and white birch wood, and bottom notes of amber and silver-cloud musk accords. Andy Warhol Union Square will be launched in March in the U.S. at Bond No. 9 boutiques, Saks Fifth Avenue and museum gift shops. It will then be rolled out to 20 different markets a month later, including retailers Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges in the U.K.

As part of the fragrance launch, Robert Lee Morris, another Warhol licensee, created 400 limited edition Warhol-inspired sterling silver Flowers necklaces. The jewelry will feature a Warhol quote engraved on the back: “My favorite smell is the first smell of spring in New York,” as well as the Bond logo. Launching in time for Mother’s Day, the 36-inch necklace will be available with a 100-ml. bottle of the fragrance for $575.

Erin Fetherston for Target Not Moving In Stores (At Least, Not in This L.A. Suburb Store)

    December 28th, 2007 | 6 Comments | Posted in Target

I dropped by Target last week and saw racks full of clothing from the Erin Fetherston line. At this point in time, I thought the racks would be almost bare. What was going on? Here are some theories:

    1. The excitement over designer collaborations with mass market retailers has waned.

    2. While some of the fabrics were sumptuous, the designs flatter only certain body types. The red babydoll dress’ empire seam hit the bust line at an odd spot on me and the white jacket could look like a potato sack on some.

    3. Pricing is a bit high for Target price points. But hey, they’re on sale at 30% off now so perhaps these items will finally move.

    4. The Target store that I visited hasn’t been infiltrated by the fashion types, despite it being located in an L.A. suburb.

The line will depart in a few weeks to make way for Jovovich-Hawk, which will debut in February probably to coincide with New York Fashion week. Next question: Where are the spoiler photos of the Jovovich-Hawk line? Somebody leak them online already!

    Splurge vs. Steal: Quilted Wallets

December 28th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Fast Fashion, Splurge vs. Steal

Marc Jacobs’ quilted wallets are relatively affordable at $28 each. They come from the designer’s “Special Items” section, which are actually the rumored third tier line, and are sold at Marc by Marc Jacobs stores. Although they are pictured here in a pearlized finish, they also come in metallic and patent versions which are very much like what you’ll find at fast fashion chain Forever 21 for only $6.80. I haven’t seen Forever 21’s version in person but as Marc’s wallets are made in China, I’m sure there isn’t that much of a difference, save for the price and label.

As for Marc Jacobs’ third tier line, business partner Robert Duffy says “it is happening right now” as quoted from Fortune Magazine:

An example of Duffy’s don’t-bother-asking-so-they-don’t-get-a-chance- to-say-no approach is the way that he and Jacobs are toying with producing a third, even lower-priced line to compete with the Gaps and H&M’s of the world. Jacobs and Duffy are excited by the idea, but LVMH isn’t interested because it’s a luxury-goods company. When asked about a third line, Stalla-Bourdillon is dismissive: “Maybe it’s better not to think about that subject.”

But Duffy hasn’t been waiting around for LVMH. “It’s happening right now,” he says. “It’s 70% of the units we sell in our stores.” It turns out he’s referring to the $20 million line of specialty items - those $20 T-shirts and the other “junk” he can barely keep in his stores. “It’s the same thing that happened with our home-ware line,” says Duffy, “They said no, so I went to the Czech Republic and had them make crystal and china and just put them in the store.”

Eventually, he says, LVMH will hear about the third line enough times that it will want to explore creating a new set of stores. “Then I’ll say, ‘All right, explore it.’ And then I’ll show them that it’s already here.”

    Lancôme Pout-à-Porter Pixel Pink

    December 27th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Beauty

Pixel Pink, the fourth and last limited-edition shade in Lancôme’s Pout-à-Porter series, will be available on March 1st. This sheer and glossy berry pink was seen at the Thakoon Spring 2008 runway show last September and was co-designed with Gucci Westman, Lancôme’s erstwhile artistic director, who just ended her tenure with the cosmetics giant. This pretty shade looks more flattering than last spring’s Proenza Pink and will surely be a big hit next spring. Pixel Pink will be available in limited quantities exclusively at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Lancôme’s five U.S. boutiques and Lancome-USA.com with a suggested retail price of $24. The waiting lists are slated to open in February but a quick call to my local Nordstrom (where I also got my P.S. Kiss, the third Pout-à-Porter shade) got me at the top of the list. So call around. Who knows, you might start a waiting list too.

    Neiman Marcus = Needless Markup?

December 25th, 2007 | 3 Comments | Posted in Fab Shops, Sales, Shoes

Why is Neiman Marcus disparagingly nicknamed “Needless Markup”? I’ve always thought it was due to high prices of the upscale merchandise they carry. Well, while browsing tonight for online deals, I came across a huge price discrepancy between Neiman Marcus and several other online merchants. Other merchants listed the item pictured below with a regular price of $395-$398.95 while Neiman listed theirs at $725 with a sale price at 25% off or $580, which is almost 50% higher than the other merchants’ regular price. I found the same mind boggling markup on these Marc by Marc Jacobs Mary Jane boots. I haven’t had a chance to check for more examples so I can’t conclusively say that these aren’t flukes. What do you think?
