The New Fast Fashion: Buy Halston on Net-A-Porter 24 Hours After Show

January 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Fab Shops, Fashion News

The term “fast fashion” has taken on a new meaning and it’s not limited to high street chains anymore. In a groundbreaking move, online giant Net-a-Porter has taken the initiative to deliver products to customers faster than the chains can copy them. Along with the relaunch of Halston, Net-a-Porter will have two key pieces available to customers within 24 hours of the label’s February 4 runway show. This is a major departure in the cycle of fashion where it takes several months for runway fashion to hit store shelves, giving plenty of time for high street stores to knock off styles and offer them at lower price points.

“This is offering a luxury brand a lifeline in an age when the high street chain will deliver their product to customers faster,” said Natalie Massenet, chairman and founder of Net-a-porter.com. “We are allowing a luxury brand to reclaim the right to sell to the customer first. We are only doing it with two looks, but hope that we are offering a glimpse to brands that we can change the fashion system and say, ‘We can get the product to the customer, because we can market and distribute in the world.’”

Net-a-porter will offer two Halston looks: a daytime shirt dress for $1,495 and an evening silk dress for $1,795 with same day delivery in London and New York and anywhere else in the world the day after.

Louis Vuitton to Run Ads on TV and in Movie Theaters

January 29th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Ad Campaigns, Luxury

Coming soon to a TV or movie theatre near you: the very first Louis Vuitton commercial. The fashion house founded in 1854 as a leather luggage company wants to reinforce its travel heritage and reach out to potential new customers. The commercials were filmed in four cities in China as well as in India, Spain and France and will feature artsy and dreamlike images of people in exotic locales as questions like “What is a journey?” flash on the screen. They will air on February 15 in 15 countries and run in select high end theatres and cable and satellite channels.

Hhmm, will this move even lower the stature of Louis Vuitton as a luxury brand? Not content with dominating the lion’s share of global sales among luxury labels, Louis Vuitton is seeking even more customers, possibly in new markets like China, India and Russia.

Splurge vs. Steal: Gladiator Wedge Sandals (Balenciaga vs. Nine West)

January 28th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Splurge vs. Steal

Last summer, celebs like Christy Turlington, Courteney Cox and Mary Kate Olsen trotted on and off the red carpet in their Balenciaga gladiator wedge sandals. Those quickly sold out and are impossible to find. But of course Nine West adapted the design at a much lesser price and even those are not available in stores anymore. Thankfully, Zappos still has them fully stocked in several colors and sizes.

I personally shied away from last summer’s super flat gladiator sandals but the added lift of the wedge makes legs more flattering so I am considering getting a pair of these in the colors pictured below. They also come in silver, bronze, and gold reptile and are $92.95 at Zappos.com.

Trembled Blossoms: Prada’s Wallpaper-Inspired Animated Short Film

January 27th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Fashion Week

Prada will be unveiling an animated short film at a private screening on February 5th during New York Fashion Week. Trembled Blossoms will debut at the Prada Epicenter in Soho and will depict the illustrations of fantastical landscapes, woodland nymphs and flowers seen from the women’s Spring 2008 collection. The four-minute film is the final chapter of Prada’s collaboration with New York City design firm 2×4 and Los Angeles illustrator James Jean, who produced the prototypical designs for the Epicenter stores, the fashion show space in Milan, the diaphanous fabrics and leather handbags.

Below are glimpses of the wallpaper at Prada Epicenter stores in New York and Los Angeles depicting, among others, legs sheathed in Prada footless socks and Sfumata pumps swallowed by giant tulips. Fantastical indeed! View the complete 17 x 200 feet wallpaper at JamesJean.com.
