New York F/W 08: Halston

February 4th, 2008 Posted in Fashion Week

Left: Halston F/W 2008 Right: Jennifer Aniston in vintage Halston at the 2003 Emmys.

I didn’t intend to put up a photo of Jennifer Aniston in vintage Halston but that brown dress on the left was what I was hoping to see at Halston’s revival runway show. I was a very young girl during Halston’s Studio 54 days in the 1970s and this is the dress that I remember being synonymous to Halston, at least it was what I had seen back then: a long and fluid floor length dress with a halter top that dipped below the cleavage but in white.

I’m glad to see that the Halston aesthetic was not tampered with on the label’s return to the runway. As designer Marco Zanini said in an interview with New York Times, “With this collection, I’ve tried not to over-design,” he said, adding that he wanted simple, well-made clothes that connect with Halston’s approach in the early 1970s, when a lot of his things were made on the bias and with relatively few cuts.

While the cuts and silhouettes stayed true to the Halston aesthetic, I would have preferred to see more of-the-moment colors like blue iris and twilight blue or even dusty purples or greens. Overall a good collection but will today’s customer be impressed?

The Guardian reports that tomorrow, Net-a-Porter will have a teal blue shirt dress, reminiscent of Halston’s 1972 classic Ultrasuede shirt dress, available for $1495. The other piece will be an evening silk dress for $1795. Hhhm. Could it be this brown dress?
