Storefronts: Robertson Boulevard

May 27th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Storefronts

Robertson Boulevard is fast losing its reputation as a quaint indie boutique shopping district with the imminent arrival of big guns like Chanel, Ralph Lauren and D&G. The trendy tree-lined street in West Hollywood is best known as a paparazzi magnet where young starlets are usually caught shopping and eating.

Will this homogenization bode well for this fashion row du jour? Kitson owner Fraser Ross told WWD, “The rents on Robertson are getting a little ridiculous and the street is getting a little more corporate, so it was time to aggressively expand elsewhere.” Kitson, one of the hippest shops on the street, is not moving but it’s definitely not putting all its eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Thank goodness those rumors of a Coach Legacy boutique did not come to fruition!

After the jump, storefront snaps of most of the shops on Robertson Boulevard.

Saks Sale: Up to 40% off

May 26th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Sales, Shoes

Saks Fifth Avenue started a pre-sale last Wednesday but now you can shop the sale online today and tomorrow and get up to 40% off. There are lots of Christian Louboutin at 30% off. They’re not a bargain yet but if you’ve been drooling over these Rodita zip sandals (on the left) or the Passmule patent wedges (on the right) as I have, then you’d better start clicking now. These are the most popular styles and you probably won’t find them in your size at the end of the sale. Or head on over to your local Saks store for the pre-sale as there are more brands that are not available online (hello, Chanel!). SaksFirst members earn triple points on their purchases as well (online today and tomorrow, online and in stores May 28-31).Update: I dropped by Saks Beverly Hills today and the shoe and handbag selections have definitely been picked over. Your best bet is to buy online… if your size is still available!

Summoning the Storm: Margiela vs. Penfound

May 25th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Design

Marc Jacobs isn’t the only designer who seems to have been inspired by another lesser known designer/artist. L.A. Times reports that Martin Margiela’s horse print t-shirt, which were seen on the Spring 2008 runway, are nearly identical to an image called “Summoning the Storm”, created in 1998 by a British artist named David Penfound.

Both images have three white stallions charging across a stormy sky as lightning flashes on jagged peaks below. The main difference between the two is that Margiela’s t-shirt does not have an image of an Indian chief on the foreground as Penfield’s image does. Another difference is the price. Margiela’s t-shirt retails for $1495, while t-shirts created with Penfound’s copyright-protected work are only $20-25.

Penfound charges $1000 to $4000 for use of the image and gets royalty of up to 10%. “The designer must know it’s illegal,” he responded to L.A. Times when asked about the similarities between the images. “I will be contacting them today,” he added.

Check out the images below. What do you think?
