Hermèssence Vétiver Tonka

A thoughtful Flickr friend recently sent me two vials of Hermèssence fragrance samples: Vetiver Tonka and Ambre Narguile. Both scents are alluring but I find myself dabbing my pulse points with the Vetiver Tonka juice more often than not.

Hermès Vetiver Tonka has notes of vetiver, neroli, bergamot, grilled hazelnut, dried fruit, cereals and tonka bean. It’s an interesting mix of sweet and dry notes that I often catch myself sniffing my wrists. As Perfume-Smellin’ Things, noted: “The union of green earthiness, caramelized nuttiness and sweet smokiness is incredibly attractive”.

I’m normally drawn to floral jasmine based scents so liking a green based vetiver scent was a surprise to me. Perhaps it was the sweet notes that drew me in. I recently purchased Prada’s Infusion d’Iris which, interestingly enough, contains vetiver. Vetiver Tonka still haunts me so I’ll most likely be making a full bottle purchase later this year.

Bodhi Safety Pin Clutch

While flipping through the pages of the latest issue of Nylon Magazine, I found an ad with a photo of this Bodhi Safety Pin Clutch. It’s made of patent leather and cow fur but the pièce de résistance of this clutch is the giant safety pin handle. Now some of you may not be with me on this one but I think the giant safety pin makes the clutch unique without being kitschy. I imagine that you could fold the pin out of sight if you wanted to. You’ll surely turn heads with this clutch! There aren’t that many stockists that I could find in the U.S. but the July 2008 issue of Elle reports that you can get this clutch at Fred Segal in Los Angeles.

Bodhi handbags is a new line of hand-crafted bags combining exotic materials, chic leather and vintage design redefining the accessory “must-have”. Starting with their Fall/Winter 2008 line, Bodhi’s bags will have enlightening mantras such as, “Peace comes from within, do not seek it without” and “With our thoughts we make our world” stitched into every hand-made bag. Gimmicky? Yes. But hey, it doesn’t hurt.

What’s going on here? Prada’s Fall 2008 runway handbags are available on Hautelook.com for up to 28% off retail. These bags have just hit stores like Neiman Marcus for the fall season. They’re not even past season or current season. They’re upcoming season and they’re already on sale. It must be the sign of the times when thousand dollar luxury designer handbags are on sale even before the season has started. Will this mean steeper discounts by the end of the season? According to L.A. Times, “it’s cool to be cheap, even among the wealthy.” The only bag that isn’t discounted is the black lace bowler bag that I love, love, love. But wait, is it really $3500? Or, as Fabsugar reported yesterday, $1995? Go check it out. Sale ends July 27 at 11:59PM PST.

Once in awhile, I like to check out Marc Jacobs’ Special Items to see what’s new. Here you’ll find cheap and chic items like quilted bags for $70 and under. I got a silver metallic tote several months ago that I used almost everyday last winter. It’s quite sturdy and, except for a few stray threads, well made. These shiny white quilted bags and wallets are new for summer. I don’t need another white bag but I think I’ll pop by the store sometime soon to check them out. At these prices, I wouldn’t mind if these get scruffed up a bit. I wish they had other colors as well, like shiny dark blue. Maybe soon! More styles after the jump…
