Latisse Approved By The FDA
Good news for those with eyelash hypotrichosis, another name for not having enough length, thickness, or darkness of the eyelashes!
The FDA recently approved eyelash-thickening drug Latisse. Created by Allergan Inc, the maker of Botox, Latisse is a once-daily prescription treatment that is applied to the base of the upper eyelash with a sterile, single-use-per-eye disposable applicator. Once treatment is stopped, eyelashes will gradually return to where they were prior to treatment. Side effects of Latisse can include eye redness, itchy eyes and a darkening of the eyelid skin. Latisse may also cause the colored part of the eye to become browner, a condition that might be permanent. Scary! Allergan said it expects to launch the product in the first quarter of 2009.

Haha I was about to say I need to try this, until I got down to the side effects – it can really change the color of your eye? Um, I think maybe they should have worked on lessening some of the side effects a little more before they released this product! Scary is right!

^Yes, definitely scary although I read somewhere that the side effects disappear once you stop using the drug. I’ll be trying castor oil, which is cheaper and effective.

Having worked with the product for years when it was only in Lumigan, I would caution the use. It does have it’s side effects. If you would like to understand them better, look up Lumigan studies and you will see. It can change you iris color….it will not change back! It can cause hyperpigmentation aka dark circles under your eyes. Lumigan fought for years to become a leader in lowering pressure for glaucoma patients……people refused or would stop using it due to the side effect profile. Let’s remember, people with glaucoma have the chance of going blind if they don’t keep their eye pressure low. These same people would stop using the product due to side effects. So, if they aren’t willing to use it due to the side effects, are longer lashes worth it? I, for one, would be highly upset if my green eyes changed to brown and I couldn’t change them back! What if only one eye changes???? Nice! The product was developed for medical use, to help people with glaucoma. It’s like steroids, they were developed for medical purposes, look how out of hand they became! AND…..the side effects.
