Christian Louboutin Special Edition: The Marie Antoinette Collection

March 3rd, 2009 Posted in Luxury, Shoes

While it is widely viewed as distasteful to flaunt one’s wealth these days, master cobbler Christian Louboutin sees nothing wrong with offering and launching a special edition shoe collection priced at $6,295 plus tax. Fittingly named after the legendary icon of excess, The Marie Antoinette Collection debuted in the U.S. last week at South Coast Plaza in Orange County. As Los Angeles Times reports, only 36 pairs were made with special orders anticipated. The open toe platform high heel satin shoe is entirely embroidered with colorful beads by the House of Jean-Francois Lesage and edged with ruffled chiffon and velvet. The ankle strap is adorned with a porcelain doll face topped with a rendering of a profuse wig, which are removable. The shoe comes blush pink, ochre yellow and royal blue.

Oh wow, I don’t even like Louboutin but these must make their way to some window. Incredible pieces. I wonder who in this economy is going to actually get a pair.

Read the LA Times article (linked above). People were buying them as wearable art and as investments. One even bought a pair not to wear but just to look at, like artwork. The collection actually sold out at South Coast Plaza.

I went by the CL store on Madison tonight, they were tucked away from the window [bastards] I know that the art market is going up, but I just can’t imagine justifying a shoe over a painting.
