Marc by Marc Jacobs Watches in ShopBop.com

January 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Watches

My friend’s younger sister was looking for an inexpensive watch and found a Marc by Marc Jacobs watch in a thick silver cuff (not pictured). It’s a really cute statement piece that doubles as a bracelet. The tiny round face is unobtrusive so you when you turn it around to hide the face, it doesn’t look like a watch. Functional and stylish, as are the other offerings from the line. The resin cuff watch is another option for those who prefer a sleeker look. This heart watch charm bracelet is quite kitschy but cute. All are relatively inexpensive from $175-$350 at Shopbop.com.

What Would You Wear to the Golden Globes?

January 15th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Jewelry, Shoes, The Red Carpet, Watches

FabSugar posed this fun question recently: Let’s pretend we’re going to tonight’s Golden Globes awards show: what’s a girl to wear? Now I’ve got the Californian laid back style down pat, but who doesn’t like dressing up once in awhile? I readily took to the challenge.

So let’s assume that I have to walk the red carpet , I have no stylist and I have less than 24 hours to come up with my outfit. That leaves me with limited choices, so no bespoke gowns for me. Let’s also assume that I am tall and statuesque because the outfit that I came up with requires such proportions to carry it well on the red carpet.

First off, I started looking for the dress. I chose this floor length tiered gown from Carmen Marc Valvo because this was the best that I’d found so far since I started looking. I would have preferred something lighter but remember my contraints? At any rate, since I’m tall and statuesque (ahem), I think this midnight blue strapless gown would look fantastic on my killer bod. The pleated satin, black lace tiers and blue streaks make a great combination.

Splurge vs. Steal

December 12th, 2006 | 3 Comments | Posted in Accessories, Splurge vs. Steal, Watches

Chanel’s J12 has been a highly sought after and coveted watch this year. And for good reason. Apart from its stylish and modern look and Swiss quartz movement, this watch is innovative for its use of the same scratch proof ceramic that NASA uses for its space applications. So you can be sure your watch will be pristine and scratch free from the day you bought it. It’s available in several styles and colors for men and women. This particular style has a white ceramic link band with a round face and two rows of diamonds on a rotating bezel. Diamonds? Yes! I love it! And for $8650 it’s worth the splurge.

Update: The Technomarine TechnoDiamond Chrono Ceramique is a better “Steal” version of the J12 than the others listed below.

It’s Swiss made. The band has white high-tech ceramic. The bezel has 125 full cut white diamonds with a total of 0.96 carats and is priced at $3350.

If you like the look but not the price, then perhaps this Anatomic Diamond Lady from Invicta will seal the deal.

It’s also Swiss made with a textured translucent ultralight thermopolymer band and 195 diamonds individually mounted in a four prong jeweler’s setting. It’s also got an anti-reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal. And for $1295, it won’t hurt your wallet was much as the J12.

Now, if you don’t really care about the bells and whistles of these two watches or you need to gift a nice but inexpensive watch, then Toy Watch USA may just fit the bill.

These hip watches are sold at upscale department stores like Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman minus a huge price tag. Sure, the straps are acrylic, the quartz movement is Miyota, not Swiss, and the markers on this particular style are, sadly, rhinestones. But they are stylish, reliable watches designed in Italy. And for $250, how can you go wrong? By the way, celebs love ‘em too. What a steal!
