Time Magazine has included Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of the iconic house of Balenciaga, among this year’s Time 100 - The People Who Shape Our World. Credited with reviving the house of Balenciaga, Ghesquière is thus exalted in the magazine:
He’s often called a designer’s designer and compared to Yves Saint Laurent in his ability to feel and shape fashion… His ability to wow the front-row crowd with a heady blend of street style and historical reverence is unparalleled. His signature silhouette of skinny pants and blouson jacket, a vestige of Ghesquière’s obsession with the ’80s, is a virtual staple in fashion’s contemporary market. His is that rarest combination of talents: untethered creativity plus commercial savvy.
While Ghesquière is undoubtedly a genius, I wonder if it was a toss up between him or the prolific Marc Jacobs whose ubiquitous creations appear to dominate the fashion world and has influenced every wannabe fashionista to brandish his logoed designs. But then again probably not, what with the latter’s creations reaching mass market proportions. Exclusivity is better, isn’t it?
