Bravo TV’s new reality show Make Me A Supermodel has just one upped other model themed reality shows like America’s Next Top Model and A Model Life. The show has actually managed to get their newbie model contestants to walk the runways in New York Fashion Week. No “You’re not ready for the runway yet. Maybe next season.” blather for these guys and gals. Walking on the runway during fashion week is a huge deal for models who want to make it to high fashion. Exposure on the catwalk can lead to editorials and more lucrative modeling assignments.

All the remaining hopefuls from last week’s episode walked the runway. (Yes, no spoilers for you. Even this week’s ousted contestant got to walk.) The girls did Gen Art’s FORM on Saturday and the guys strutted at R. Scott French on Monday. They also got to watch shows at the tents prior to their runway debuts.

Lucky ducks!

New York F/W 08 Trend: Bowed Necklines

Big bows or small bows, several necklines seen on the New York runways for fall 2008 were sporting bows. Most of them were tied and one was sewed on.

We love the flourish of big bows although they are a bit tricky to pull off. Make sure the bow is in proportion to your height and size or it could look overwhelming.

Actress Gywneth Paltrow sported the look last night at he Gucci benefit for ‘Malawi and Unicef’.

New York F/W 08: Halston

February 4th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Fashion Week

Left: Halston F/W 2008 Right: Jennifer Aniston in vintage Halston at the 2003 Emmys.

I didn’t intend to put up a photo of Jennifer Aniston in vintage Halston but that brown dress on the left was what I was hoping to see at Halston’s revival runway show. I was a very young girl during Halston’s Studio 54 days in the 1970s and this is the dress that I remember being synonymous to Halston, at least it was what I had seen back then: a long and fluid floor length dress with a halter top that dipped below the cleavage but in white.

I’m glad to see that the Halston aesthetic was not tampered with on the label’s return to the runway. As designer Marco Zanini said in an interview with New York Times, “With this collection, I’ve tried not to over-design,” he said, adding that he wanted simple, well-made clothes that connect with Halston’s approach in the early 1970s, when a lot of his things were made on the bias and with relatively few cuts.

While the cuts and silhouettes stayed true to the Halston aesthetic, I would have preferred to see more of-the-moment colors like blue iris and twilight blue or even dusty purples or greens. Overall a good collection but will today’s customer be impressed?

The Guardian reports that tomorrow, Net-a-Porter will have a teal blue shirt dress, reminiscent of Halston’s 1972 classic Ultrasuede shirt dress, available for $1495. The other piece will be an evening silk dress for $1795. Hhhm. Could it be this brown dress?

A Quick Note on Fashion Week Coverage

February 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Fashion Week

So the weekend is almost over and I will be back at my real work tomorrow. I won’t be able to post as much but if you check out the sidebar on ShopDiary’s main page, I will be linking to fashion week photos and videos as they become available. They are arranged alphabetically and you just need to click through each designer/label’s name to view the photos and/or videos. Ah, so many shows and so little time! Tomorrow: Halston!

Many thanks to Coutorture for the fast and furious updates of photos and videos. They beat Style, Elle and New York Mag this weekend in giving us high resolution photos and videos within hours of each show. Kudos for all your hard work and excellent coverage, Coutorture!
