Reading an Ad Free Magazine

a much thinner Vogue

Today I just discovered the joys of reading a magazine minus the clutter. No, the magazine did not come ad free. I don’t think you can ever expect that anymore.

This afternoon when I was packing the Chloe Paddington that I had finally sold in the big, bad world of eBay (yes!), I discovered that I needed some styrofoam peanuts to fill the box. I didn’t have time to run to the store to buy some, so in a fit of inspiration, I spied my January issue of Vogue that I hadn’t read yet (did I tell you that I have tons of magazine subscriptions that I don’t get to read at all?). I proceeded to rip the pages with ads, leaving the meat and bones part of the magazine (the articles, table of contents and even the masthead), and crumpled the crisp, glossy paper into balls and filled the box to the brim. I hope my buyer won’t be dismayed with what I did!

So tonight I relax in my bedroom, whip out my Vogue and feel a sense of relief that, wow, I can read this magazine even with my lingering migraine. Once on a flight to Chicago, I sat next to a woman who ripped out all the pages that contained fragrance strips before reading her glossy mag. I somehow felt that she was defiling the magazine!

Now I understand, in the midst of my current life full of clutter, the need to edit things. I have a lingering migraine from two nights ago and have come to realize that I need to reduce the clutter in my life. All the RSS feeds that I read, the e-mail notifications that I get, and other things that are not a matter of consequence need to be reduced somehow. I need to learn to prioritize or else my head would literally explode and I was afraid that it almost did two nights ago (don’t mind my drama).

So what a relief to discover another way to de-clutter my life quite accidentally like I did today. I don’t know if I’ll be ripping out the ads from my other magazines in the future because let’s face it, the ads are like icing on the cake and, for some magazines, nothing would be left!

But today, I don’t need the icing on the cake. Just the meat and bones for now, thank you!
