Navy and White Stripes

May 6th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Trend Watch

This week’s trend watch focuses on navy and white stripes, inspired with my recent purchase of a kimono sleeve top with navy and white stripes at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica (I have not found a photo of this top online so I will have to take one of mine). This proves that while navy and white usually evoke the nautical theme, not everything has to look nautical (except for the first outfit below).

Skull-and-Crossbones

It’s hard not to notice the skull-and-crossbones trend that is currently sweeping the mainstream fashion scene. Fashionistas everywhere must be in uproar about this trend going mainstream since Alexander McQueen debuted his now highly coveted skull scarf way back in Spring/Summer 2003! It’s not one to avoid however as there seems to be an explosion of related items to get you in on the trend.

I think the appeal is that we’re not seeing the edgy hard core look that is usually associated with skulls and bones. The aforementioned Alexander McQueen scarf comes in pretty colors and is made of fine silk. The silk looks quite delicate and gives it a feminine touch. Thomas Wylde carries similar themed scarves though they are not as beautiful as Alexander McQueens’ (in my opinion anyway).

Other skull items are looking quite dainty as well. Take for instance, this sterling silver necklace from Me&Ro:

Instead of crossbones, the skull is paired with a pendant of Chinese characters and hangs from a multi-colored Peruvian opal chain.

Roberto Coin Necklace
And then there’s this Roberto Coin 18k White Gold Necklace with Diamond Skull Pendant. There’s even a ruby hidden in the back.

Of course a basic Grail tee or casual NFY Jeans will get you there too. Just remember to wear one skull item at a time. No multiples please!

Chevron

I am loving the chevron pattern right now. Here are a few of my current faves:

Anthropologie Sidecar Sweater
ANTHROPOLOGIE SIDECAR SWEATER
It all started when I saw this sweater. I love it!

Confitero Skirt
ANTHROPOLOGIE CONFITERO SKIRT
It’s not necessary to match the top with another chevron pattern. But if you must, this skirt complements the top perfectly.

Marc Jacobs Caroline
MARC JACOBS CAROLINE
How could we forget Marc Jacobs?

BCBG Skirt
BCBG MAX AZRIA SEQUIN CHEVRON SKIRT
This is a great skirt to go with the bag

Tory Burch Canaflecha Bracelet
TORY BURCH CANAFLECHA BRACELET
Cute with the skirt and the bag, but that’s enough of the pattern in one outfit

GOYARD JEANNE PM
How could we forget the granddaddy of all chevron patterns? Goyard!

OK, you could say that the sweater, skirt and bracelet are in zigzag patterns. But you get what I’m trying to show, don’t you?
