Cozy Up With A Snood For Fall

Apparently, the snood will be fall’s super hip accoutrement of the season. Fashion houses like Burberry Prorsum and Missoni featured them on their Fall 2009 runways wrapped around models’ heads and necks. Stella McCartney had one for Fall 2008.

What is a snood, you say? Well, historically, a snood was what we now call hairnets – a scary term for anyone wanting to be remotely fashionable. In modern times, it applies to a tubular neck protector or warmer that can be worn pulled down around the neck like a scarf, or pulled up over the hair and lower face like a hood. It’s a European term so you might not have heard of it until lately but most likely you’ve seen it around thinking it was simply a hooded scarf.

Net-a-Porter carries a small selection of snoods. Wool and cashmere snoods run from $225 – $295 while one in rabbit fur (it just sold out) is $1200.

At any rate, in these recessionary times, you could also improvise a la Edie Bouvier Beale and wear a sweater bottom side up (she wore a blue sweater as headgear back in the early 70s) or wear large scarves you already own artfully wrapped as if the ends were sewn together.

Will you be wearing a snood this fall?
